Fewer than half of 18 to 24-year-olds exercised their right to vote in the last election, compared to three quarters of people aged 65 and above.
This is despite repeated unsuccessful efforts to reach younger voters from politicians across all political parties. Reform has the largest reach on TikTok of any political party, backbench Labour MPs have been encouraged to join YouTube and TikTok, and former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak posed in Adidas Sambas in an effort to connect. Despite these attempts, according to a 2025 electoral commission report, only 45% of people aged 11 to 25 say they are interested in UK politics.
What are the key barriers to political leaders achieving cut through with younger voters?
If you were hired to advise a political leader on engaging with, and increasing support from, young voters:
- What policies would you recommend they introduce, or remove, to increase their support among younger voters?
- What channels would you recommend they use to speak to younger voters? How could they use the media to boost their popularity among young people?
